Images of the Underworld

This fifth century manuscript illumination shows Aeneas and his guide, the Sibyl.

In this woodcut by Sebastian Brant (1502), Aeneas' companions prepare the funeral of Misenus (whose corpse is being carried by three men in the center), while Aeneas and Achates (at the top right) look for the bough. Aeneas was guided by two doves (birds sacred to his mother, Venus) to an ilex tree on which grew the bough with golden leaves.
