Introduction:  Congratulations!  You have won a free, all expense paid trip to Egypt because of your wonderful classroom behavior and performance.  You will arrive in Alexandria at the airport at 10:00 am.  When you arrive at the airport, a man approaches you and hands you an alabaster jug.  Inside it you find the following message:

 

Task:  You have been randomly selected to participate in the adventure

of a lifetime.  You will find a series of clues that describe a spectacular

treasure.  The clues will be written in hieroglyphics and you must crack

the code.  The directions to each of your sites will be in English.  You

will be told the approximate amount of miles to your next site, but it will

not tell you the specific city.  It will however describe to you a famous

Ancient Egyptian architectural site in that city.  You must identify both the

city and the famous architectural site.  You will need to use the map and the links provided.  Before you are given the treasure at the end of your journey

you must identify what the treasure is based on the information you learn in

your clues.  You must crack the code.  Good luck to you.    

 

P.S.: Remember that a hieroglyphic can represent a whole word, group of words or

        part of a word.

 

Materials:  Colored pencils (blue, yellow, purple, red, orange, and green)

Process:

1) Print out the blank map (control click on this link)

     * On the blank map you will:

         a) draw in the Nile River in blue and represent the capital of Egypt with a

              yellow star (     )

         b) represent your starting point (Alexandria) with a purple square (    )

         c) trace your path with dashed red lines (- - - - -) from one city to the next

                    d) mark the location of each city with an orange circle (   )

                    e) label each        with the name of the city it represents

                    f) underneath the name of each city write the name of the architecture

                        site described in green

2)  As you break the code fill in this hieroglyphic page.  Find a pattern with the hieroglyphics and write what you think they could be saying.

3) Write down two fact about each architectural site visited that is not in the description.

4)  Let the adventure continue…

                  a)  Inside the alabaster jug there is another note with directions to your next

                     city and a description of the architectural site in that city where you will find     

                     your next clue and directions to your next stop.

 

                    Directions:  Your next city stop is approximately 90 miles south from

                                          Alexandria.   

                    Architectural Site Description:  I am sculpted from bedrock and am the

                         largest the sculpture in the world.  Some of my features have been worn

                         off by wind and sand erosion and other circumstances.  I am a symbol of

                         the strength of the Ancient Necropolis of my city and homage to my

                         king.

                     You will find your next clue and directions inside an Egyptian vial.

b)  Clue:  ◙ ☼ † ờ

Directions:  Your next city stop is approximately 150 miles south of your

                      last stop. 

Architectural Site Description:  I am in limestone cliffs and contain 39

   tombs from the Middle Kingdom.  On one of my tombs on this site you

   will see inscriptions of soldiers attacking the palace.  Another tomb has a

   fake door that is facing the west (some people believed this was the

   direction the dead entered the underworld).   

                         You will find your next clue and directions inside a canopic jar.

 c)  Clue:  ● ф ‡ ≡э

 Directions:  Your next city stop is approximately 160 miles south from

    your last stop. 

                         Architectural Site Description:  Ptolemy VIII and Queen Cleopatra II

                            built me.  I am dedicated to the Goddess of maternity, love, and music.

                         You will find your next clue and directions tied with a string around

                              a paddle doll.       

                    d)  Clue: ● ф ‡ ⌂◦

                         Directions:  Your next city stop is Deir el-Bahri, which is located in the

                                               region of Western Thebes.  You will have to use a different

                                               map to locate this area because it is not on your original map.

                        Architectural Site Description:  My people call me “sacred of the

                             sacreds”.  My Queen built me as “a garden” to her father.  There are

                             statues of my Queen that make her look as if she were the God Osiris.

                             I have many terraces, ramps, and colonnades. 

                         You will find your next clue and directions taped to the back of an

                               Egyptian vessel.    

e)  Clue:  & ♥ ♀

Directions:  Your next city stop is approximately 50 miles south from

                      Deir el-Bahri. 

Architectural Site Description:  I am the largest and most complicated

      architecture in Egypt.  I have two axis.  My east and west axis

      corresponds with the orbits of the sun and my north and south axis

      corresponds with the Nile River.  I have two statues of  Ramses II.

You will find your next clue and directions underneath an Egyptian

      headrest.   

 

  f)  Clue:  с ũ ♀ = ◙ ┼

  Directions:  Your next city stop is approximately 12 miles south

                      from your last stop. 

  Architectural Site Description: I am connected to the last place you

       visited.  My architect may have been the son of Hotep.  You can view

       many different styles in my structure because many different pharaohs

       have built different parts of me.  I have damn built around me.

                           You will find your next clue and directions engraved onto the back of

                               an amulet.

  g)  Clue:    *  ٤ ◙ ⁿ

  Directions:  Your next city stop is approximately 80 miles south from your last stop.

  Architectural Site Description:  I am very unique.  I was built for two

       Gods and have two of everything.  I have a passage outback that is for

       relief. 

You will find your next clue and directions attached to a sistrum.

  h)   Clue:  ● ф __­­­­­ ≈ -----

   Directions:  Your next city stop is 40 miles south from your

                          last stop.

                          Architectural Site Description: I am dedicated to Osiris’s bride.

                                 Different religions have left their mark on me and each ruined the

                                 group before theirs mark. 

                           You will find your next clue attached to a cat mummy.

i)    Clue:  ● ф ■ ≈ □

  Directions:  You final stop is 140 miles south from your last stop.

  Architectural Site Description:  I was dedicated to a triad.  My

        supporting columns are not columns.  I was damaged during an

        earthquake, my owner never knew.  I was constructed for a thirteen

        century Pharaoh.

Your treasure will be waiting for you at the entrance of this

 architectural site.  Do you know what I am?  Did you

                                                                     solve the code.

Assessment:  Informal-   Create your own code of hieroglyphics.  Then write a letter to one of your     friends describing your trip to Egypt.  Describe two     architectural sites you visited in the letter.  It should contain two paragraphs, 12-15 sentences minimum per paragraph.  Include an identification sheet stating what each hieroglyphic represents.  Use the links above for ideas if you are struggling.

Conclusion:   Congratulations!  Hopefully you have successfully found your treasure.  If you

                       did not crack the code, continue studying it.  You have now visited all part of

                       Egypt and your probably travel jagged!  By the way what kind of transportation

                       did you use to get around Egypt?  You were a wonderful participant.  Now raise
