On my way to school today I kept noticing all the shapes of the signs. The stop sign is an octagon, the speed limit signs are rectangle, and so on. Geometry must be on my mind today…and no wonder, today we are studying quadrilaterals. You will get a chance to go on the computer and play around making shapes that are only quadrilaterals. But first you have to watch me have some fun and answer my questions then it’s your turn. So let’s get going shall we?!? ( 2 mins)

Students sit at the computers facing away from them so they are not messing with them.

Sit down at the computers and turn away from the screen and look at the giant screen. Here are a few rules: you are to stay only on the provided websites. You will not surf the web and if you are seen you will be sent to the office to call your parents and explain to them why you are in trouble and what you were doing on another site.

The students will then turn to the computers and follow along as the teacher goes through the lesson.

The teacher will have a student come work the computer as they walk through the website to teach the lesson. The teacher will then walk around to make sure students stay on the correct site and answer any questions that they are.

The students will explore the website to get a better understanding of quadrilaterals.

The teacher will then give the students a chance to explore the website since there is an interactive activity on there.

http://shapeinlay.fupa.com/ The students will play the shapes in lay game with quadrilaterals to see how they fit together. Once they completed that game they will go and play shape switcher http://www.fupa.com/game/Puzzles-flash-games/shapeswitcher.html and figure out why they switched the shapes they did.

The teacher will walk around asking the students what shapes are being moved together and why they are fitting together spending 1 min with each student.

http://www.mathsisfun.com/games/math-match-game.html The students will go to this site to play some math games. They will spend 5 mins on the matching the shapes trying to get the fastest time in the class.

 

The students will play the games on the site and the teacher will tell them when 5 minutes are up to switch to the next game. They will play a total of 3 games. 2 of them are matching shapes to each other and its name. The last one will be their choice so they have some fun. Walk around asking students why the shapes match or why they picked that game.

The students will fill out evaluations about the games that they played. They will write what they learned from it or if it was just a waste of their time.

Today we studied quadrilaterals and even got to create our own. For homework tonight I would like you to draw up some more quadrilaterals and explain what makes them that. Then you should also name them and we will hang everyone’s shape up around the room and possibly will be tested on some of them. Have fun with this assignment but also make sure your reasoning is correct to what we learned today. Have a great rest of the day and tomorrow we will be learning about circles. See you all tomorrow and I can not wait to see what you come up with. (2 mins)

 

 

EXTENSIONS AND/OR RELATED ACTIVITIES

 

 

The students could go back into pictures that we have already looked at from the landscapes of different countries and pick out the quadrilaterals. Students could also use Geoboards to make quadrilaterals as well.

 

 

MODIFICATIONS FOR DIVERSE LEARNERS

 

 

For the students who are my computer/technology enthusiasts this lesson will give then a chance to shine. They will get to have fun on the computer and still learn something while doing it. For those who are my creative and visual learners the homework will help them to understand the concept more. The learners who are more hands on will really benefit from the interactive activities on the computer. For those learners who are more advanced than others they will be allowed to go off exploring on the site after the lesson. However they will have to stay on the websites that are provided just will be able to progress and go farther than other students.
