Rainforests are very lush and wet.  Downpours are very common and rainforests can receive up to 400 inches of rain per year.  Rainforests are very diverse in the number of plant and animal species that they contain, in fact they are the most diverse biome on planet Earth. There are two types of rainforest, Tropical rainforests and temperate rainforest.  Tropical rainforests are found close to the equator. Temperate rainforests are found along coasts in the temperate zone.

Rainforests are one of the most endangered biomes on the planet.  There is only about 3% of the temperate rainforest left in the United States that where once here.  Tropical Rainforests cover about 6% of the earth's surface but they contain nearly half of the planets plant and animal species.  An area about the size of a football field of rainforest is destroyed every minute!
