Elements are made up of only one kind of atom.  That is why they can not be separated into two or more substances.

Compounds contain more than one kind of atom and the atoms are bonded to each other to form molecules.  All of the molecules of the same substance have the same number of atoms of each element.

Mixtures contain different molecules and/or atoms which are not bonded to each other.
