First Writing Assignment

Response to “Quiet Rage: The Stanford Prison Experiment”

Introduction to Sociology, Spring 2008

J. Kessler

Due Wednesday, March 5, in turnitin.com and in class – submit to turnitin before submitting hard copy in class

Assignment: DISCUSS THE PURPOSES AND OUTCOMES OF THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT, FROM A SOCIOLOGICAL POINT OF VIEW

Things to consider when constructing your paper:

What was the intent of the experiment?  Why was it conducted? What did Zimbardo aim to explain?

Which relevant sociological ideas and concepts (not all sociological ideas and concepts – just one or two relevant ones) that we have discussed in class or read about in Chapters 1-5 & 7 help to explain what took place in the Stanford Prison? What sociological concepts and principles were supported or reinforced by the findings?

What was/were the outcome/s of the experiment, from a sociological point of view?

Instructions – please review them carefully:

1. The paper will be no shorter than 1.5 pages and no longer than 2 pages, submitted first to turnitin.com (class ID# 2123588; password: sociology), and then in paper copy to the instructor. Instructions for first-time turnitin users are linked to your on-line syllabus.

2. Use default margins, Times New Roman font, size 11 or 12 pt, and double spacing. Do not leave margins larger than the default on either the top or bottom of pages.

3. No cover page, please. Type your name and date on the first page of your essay, and print out on two sides*.

4. This paper should be written in essay format, not question-and-answer.

5. Do not retell the story of the Stanford Experiment; this paper is meant to be analysis and commentary, using selected episodes from the experiment to support your arguments.

6. This is a college-level writing assignment.  As such, it is expected that your thoughts will be well-organized and your writing clear and concise, with close attention paid to proper use of paragraphs, grammar, syntax, spelling, and punctuation.  Please use your dictionary to correct all spelling and typographical errors.

If you are at all unsure of your written communications skills, I strongly encourage you to work with a tutor at the Writing Center.

*Printing Your Work Double-Sided Saves $$ and Trees - In Word or WordPerfect, first choose:

File, then Print, then Properties, then Finishing (or Features, depending on the printer), then check the box for "Print Both Sides"

Checking the box will set printing on both sides as your default, so if you need to use single-sided printing, you will need to go back through the procedure and un-check the box.

Do not use the printer icon in Word or it will automatically print your file before you have a chance to format it for both-side printing.
