THIRD WRITING ASSIGNMENT
Introduction to
Sociology
Spring 2008, J. Kessler
Due Friday, May
2nd, in turnitin.com and in class
Both of sociology’s major macro perspectives address the significance of gender in society (review the sections on the functional and social conflict perspectives and analyses in chapters 1 and 13). For this paper you will use either the functional perspective or social conflict perspective to analyze the practice of foot-binding in China and the practice of sati in Hindu India, as discussed in the handout, “Sick Societies,” by Robert B. Edgerton.
This paper is to be analytical, not descriptive. In other words, please do not re-tell the story of “Sick Societies.” What I am interested in is either a functionalist or social conflict analysis of the cultural practices of foot-binding and sati, using material from “Sick Societies” to support your assertions.
Instructions – please review them carefully:
1. Two-sided printing only.* One-sided printing will not be accepted.
2. The paper should be no shorter than 1.5 pages and no longer than 2 pages, submitted first to turnitin.com (class ID# 2123588; password: sociology), and then in paper copy to the instructor. Instructions for first-time turnitin users are linked to your on-line syllabus.
3. Use default margins, Times New Roman font, size 11 or 12 pt, and double spacing. Do not leave margins larger than the default on either the top or bottom of pages.
4. No cover page, please. Type your name and date, single-spaced, on the first page of your essay.
5. This is a college-level writing assignment. As such, it is expected that your thoughts will be well-organized and your writing clear and concise, with close attention paid to proper use of paragraphs, grammar, syntax, spelling, and punctuation. Please use your dictionary to correct all spelling and typographical errors.
If you are at all unsure of your written communications skills, I strongly encourage you to work with a tutor at the Writing Center.
*Printing Your Work Double-Sided Saves $$ and Trees - In Word or WordPerfect, first choose:
File, then Print, then Properties, then Finishing (or Features, depending on the printer), then check the box for "Print Both Sides"
Checking the box will set printing on both sides as your default, so if you need to use single-sided printing, you will need to go back through the procedure and un-check the box.
Do not use the printer icon in Word or it will automatically print your file before you have a chance to format it for both-side printing.
