Digital Photos of the Monmouth College Copy
These are digital photos of the Monmouth College Copy of the Canopus Stone. Obviously, it is damaged. In 1907, it suffered through the fire that destroyed Old Main hall on the Monmouth College campus. It feel from the third floor to the basement. Many, many years later it was restored, housed in a glass-topped case, and relocated to the Hewes Library at Monmouth College thanks to Dr. Charles Speel. The stone is incomplete. The rounded top piece and much of the hieroglyph section are still missing; they may still exist. The side piece with the demotic text was missing, but has recently been identified by Rick Sayre, Director of the Hewes Library. It is now part of the antiquities collection owned by Monmouth College. Unfortunately, the demotic section of the stone is badly worn; nearly no demotic figures can be seen--photos were not possible at this time. Please keep in mind that this stone is a COPY of the original; it is NOT the original.
These pictures aid in understanding the design of the stone. I am not very competent with a digital camera, so the pictures are not the best. I have tried to show close-ups of the Greek text, but especially of the hieroglyphs. The Greek is easily decipherable; the Hieroglyphs require one to look closely, but a few Hieroglyphic images can be seen.
