Dionysian Mysteries

The Greek god Dionysus, also known as Bacchus was a very important and unique god.  Dionysus was very popular among Roman women because he was their source of sensual and spiritual hopes.  These women followers were also known as Bacchant.  Upon readings of Dionysus, it is found that his presence brought about strong feelings of sensuality and sexuality, especially for his female followers.

In The Villa of Mysteries, paintings tell the story of the initiation of women into the Dionysian religion.  Dionysus is present in the center of the paintings.  According to the Villa of Mysteries, privileged, protected girls are being prepared to transition into life as a married woman.  It is obvious that nudity is prevalent in many of the paintings.  This could mean many things, but it most likely symbolizes either purity or the occurrence of sexual actions.  It doesn’t seem too surprising that there was so much nudity because of Dionysus’ sensual and sexual vibes.  Also, the people in these paintings don’t seem to be uncomfortable being nude.  Today, being nude during a ceremony or “initiation” is very uncommon.  I don’t know of any religion that uses nudity as part of their worship.

From the paintings, we see that the beginning of this initiation shows the bride crossing the threshold as the rites begin.  She goes through many different processes such as being read the rules of the rite, wearing different objects as symbols of special meaning, and being purified by water.  Also, certain mythological characters and music are brought into the scene.  She went through all of this to simply prepare for her marriage.  Compared to modern day Christianity, there isn’t much of a similarity with women preparing for marriage.  They don’t have to go through any ceremonies like the Dionysian women had to go through.  The only similarity that I do find is that most churches require the couple to go through a series of sessions with the priest in order to prepare themselves for marriage, but it is done by both the man and the woman. From what I gather from the paintings, this wasn’t exactly the most enjoyable initiation to go through.  It was evident that there were many feelings of fear and pain.  This is shown through the occurrence of whips.  When I think of whips, I don’t think enjoyable thoughts, more like pain and torture.  This could closely relate to modern Christianity because Jesus was tortured as part of an initiation.  He did this because he wanted to give us life.

The Dionysian religion also contained animal sacrifice.  This was highly encouraged by Dionysus because it supposively exposed the Dionysian power that was in the animal.  This was a way that people could honor Dionysus.  When these animal sacrifices were performed there was usually a big festival with wine, food, and open sexual actions.  Today, these types of ceremonies don’t happen in the Christian religion.  I’m not sure if they have ever happened in the past, but I personally don’t see how animal sacrifice could make someone feel more pure or more complete within their religious lives.

In the Dionysian religion, there were also ceremonies called orgies.  These were special rituals where there was wild singing, dancing, and drinking.  Later, it became more sexual.  These ceremonies were held in honor of the Gods and seemed to get extremely unruly.  In modern day Christianity, this could be compared to a wedding reception, because of the presence of alcohol and dancing.

The Dionysian religion is very interesting because some elements of it are comparable to other religions, whereas some of the elements are very different and diverse from other religions.  Just like other Greek gods and religions, Dionysus had worshipers, celebrations, and ceremonies.  But unlike other Greek gods and religions, the Dionysian religion seemed to be very sexual and vulgar.
