Prospectus

For my Individualized Project, I have chosen the topic of comparing and contrasting the two Goddesses, Aphrodite and Hera.  Both of these goddesses played major roles in Greek mythology and were portrayed through many stories and pieces of art, so I would like to explore them more.  Also, I would like to compare their characteristics to those of my God.

So far, I have done a little bit of research on the two Greek goddesses, mainly through Internet websites.  As of now, I have only looked at one book that contains information on both of the goddesses.  I am currently researching the similarities on the two goddesses and will soon move on to research the differences between them.  I have also found information on the many different pieces of artwork that relate to both Aphrodite and Hera.

Annotated Bibliography

Cotterell, Arthur.  Classical Mythology.  New York:  Lorenz Books, 1999.

This book contains information on many different Gods and Goddesses in classical Greek mythology.  It will be useful for general information on the two goddesses as well as providing a good source of artwork representing Aphrodite, Hera, and also many other gods and goddesses.

Hera and Her Impact on Greek Culture.  [online]  Available:

http://apk.net/~fjk/hera.html.  (March 18, 2002)

This website on Hera is very similar to that of the website about Aphrodite.  It provides basic information on Hera, a timeline of her life, and her family tree.

Kluth, John.  Aphrodite in Ancient Greek Art.  [online]  Available:

http://apk.net/~fjk/aphro.html.  (March 18, 2002)

This website provides a large amount of information on Aphrodite.  It contains facts about Aphrodites’ temples, her symbols, and also myths about her.  In addition to this information, it provides a list of goddesses similar to Aphrodite.

Lombardi, Anne.  Aphrodite:  Her Power and Her Art. [online]  Available:

http://www.arthistory.sbc.edu/imageswomen/papers/lombardiaphrodite/aphrodite.html. (March 18, 2002)

This website discusses Aprhodite and her birth, her powers, her behaviors, etc.  It also includes many pieces of artwork about Aphrodite.

In means of presenting this project, I will most likely be writing a paper, but I may also do a power point presentation in order to make it more interesting by displaying pictures and artwork of the two goddesses.  Whichever w ay I choose to do this presentation will depend on the information that I gather and how I decide the layout of all of the information and artwork.
