Pinch Pots (learning objective: manipulation of clay ball
using the fingertips and other tools to smooth and finish in order to
create open and closed pinched forms.)
Closed: (4 pieces) The concept of an enclosed pinch pot is to pinch
two pots, fairly close in shape and size, and slip and score them
together to make a ball like form. You can then take it and paddle
it into a ball, oval, or an egg shape. Then you can add/subtract
etc. to make whatever your imagination wants to explore!
Assignments for Pinch Pots:
1) two pinched pots joined together to make an interesting
form. Construct two of these pieces.
2) two pinched pots joined together and left completely enclosed but
add some interesting attachments.
3) two pinched pots joined together and enclosed then cut a liod and
add some feet.
Open:
1) one pinched pot opened with a highly textured surface;
2) one opened pinch pot with an asymmetrical
shape;
3) one pinched pot shaped into a rounded form with a small opening in the top.
Coil Vessels (learning objective: rolling
or extruding and connecting coils in order to achieve sculptural forms).
Work on both of these pieces at the same time!
Assignments for Coil Vessels:
1) Bottle form
(coils may be exposed or smoothed - dimensions: 18" minimum height
with a circumference at the smallest point of 2" (lip) and 8"
(or more) at the
widest point (belly).
2) Create two open bowl forms with a
flared rims - dimensions: the lip must be triple the foot - minimum 4"
foot and 12" rim (be aggressive try one larger).
Slab Construction (soft and leather
hard) (learning objective: building with soft and leather hard
clay slabs in order to create real or imaginary spaces and creatures.
Assignments for Slabs:
1) Create a
real or imaginary enclosure (a building or dwelling or house).
Dimensions: the height +width+depth must add up to around 21 - 24" (make
sure you use hard and soft slabs for constructing this dwelling);
2)
Create a handbuilt teapot or coffee pot and a set of two to four tea
bowls or coffee mugs.
3) Create a set of drinking steins. (height at least 6/7 inches)
